                                          Activities for Using a Switch
                             

                           

Students that use a switch to access the world around them should have the opportunity to do so throughout the day. For switch use to have meaning to the child it must occur frequently and as naturally as possible.  Keep students switch available and with them at all times.
The following are examples of switch activities.
Reading:
   activate a tape player to hear stories on tape or cd
   activate Voice output device to "read" the repeating  line in the story
   turn the pages of an electronic book on the computer
   activate and electric page turner
   read directions to the class
   read the steps of a recipe

Science:
   turn on a blender to mix conncoctions for science experiments
   turn on a fan to represent "natural phenomenas" such as weather conditions, hurricanes, tornadoes etc..
   annouce the weather by turning on a pre-recorded message in a switch adapted cd player 
   turn on a water pik to water plants
   turn on a water pik to demonstrate "gravity" place the water pik at different levels have students predict which way   the water will flow
   turn on the switch adapted pourer to distribute experiment items

Classroom "Jobs" 
   Pencil Sharpener-  turn the sharpener on and off for anyone wanting a sharpened pencil
   Plant Waterer- turn on a water pik to water the plants
   Classroom Reporter- activate a pre-recorded device with the classroom's daily news
`   Pledge Leader- activate a pre-recorded device with the Pledge
   Paper Shredder- activate a paper shredder and re-cycle the shredded paper by using it for packing material

Art
   turn on spin art (can adapt with a battery adapter)
    draw using a bump and go switch toy with a marker attached
   turn on a blender to mix paint or play dough
   turn on a popcorm popper to create popcorn for "Popcorn Art"
   activate battery scissors
   turn on a hairdryer to  dry paint projects

Daily Living
   turn on blender to make smoothies, snowballs, milkshakes,
   hairdryer to dry hair
   hairdryer to dry dishes
   turn television on/off
   turn lights on/off

Music
   become a member of a "Switch Choir" software program that requires switch user to activate their switch at a specific time to play a note in a song
   turn on the music
   turn on the switch bells or switch windchimes
   play a musical selction to the class by turning on the tape player
   be a character/narator in the school play by activating pre-record voice out put device

Fun!!
   work at the school carnival's face painting station by turning a light up mirror on
   turn on a switch adapted i-pod
   use a battery adapted spinner for games
   turn Lucky Ducks on/off

Social
   tell jokes with a leveled voice output device
   turn on a fan to cool down a friend after recess
   state greetings

Physical Activities and Mobilitiy
   be the pitcher during a baseball game by using a battery interrupted pitching machine
   drive a car
                                                           

Math
   turn an electronic scale
   turn on the switch adapted pourer to pour measured amounts

  1. Where do I get one of those devices that connects the adaptive switch to the electric appliance (ie: a radio)? I am working with a VERY disabled man with TBI who simply wants to be able to turn his (AC plugs in the wall) radio on/off. We have a large "Smoothie" switch but can't find a connector like the turquoise & white rectangular device in the photo above.

    1. You can find one on Amazon. It is called a PowerLink. The version they have out is version 4 and looks different than the one pictured above. Hope this helps!
