Social Thinking, by Cindi Meester

Social Thinking (4 of 4) – VIDEOS

Don’t forget to look under the other three Social Thinking titles.
!  SUGGESTION  !  It is always wise to preview any video prior to using it in a lesson.
12/2010 Geico commercials I love these! I can see using them in social thinking groups and talking about what unthinkable they are.
i-movies -ASD students using a webquest    http://www.edina.k12.mn.us/concord/services/specialed/anderson/webquest/introwq.htm
4/8/10-   Videos from England to help children deal with doctor visits and other anxieties http://www.animalagentz.com/home.aspx
3/26/10-Check out Arthur on PBS- Arthur and his pals will make a new friend, Carl, who has Asperger Syndrome. Another great way to teach kids about awareness and compassion! New season begins on April 5th. Here is a preview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0TyHLWEhII
3/26/10- Video about a high school that caters specifically to kids with Asperger’s.  http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/assignment_7&id=7349100

Check out this great Superflex video created by 4th grade students in Virgina: http://www.chesterfield.k12.va.us/Schools/Greenfield_ES/home.html
I have used the Cars movie to work on social thinking skills for friendship, bullies, etc. Here is a clip from YouTube.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntqlqgiPwuw
2/28/10- Once in a while you run across commercials or YouTube videos that just make you laugh or if you are a SLP you find ways to use them as an activity lesson! Here are some I’ve found
Mr. Bean- I have often used the Mr. Bean DVDs for lessons. He is a great resource to use for working on: body language, what is he thinking and  expected vs unexpected. You can find many episodes on YouTube here is one- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4cmrMJul1g
Wallace and Gromit- I  have often used the Wallace and Gromit DVDs for lessons too for the same reasons as listed under Mr. Bean. Try a search on YouTube for Wallace and Gromit movies and you will find many options. Here is one clip on YouTube : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_f26RyV8F0U
3rd Rock from the Sun- STRONG SUGGESTION: You NEED to preview before using any clips in lessons due to some adult content or innuendoes. This sitcom is about a group of extraterrestrials on an expedition of what they consider to be the least important planet, Earth (the 3rd Rock from the Sun), while posing as a human family of four, to observe human beings.  This one I have not used at the elementary level due to content and limited availability but now YouTube has it on their site. Here is one :  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugKcTAuCcyg
Wall-E  is a movie that has very little talking. I have used this movie to work on non-verbal language.
Be sure to check out Jill Kuzma’s site for other videos- http://jillkuzma.wordpress.com/youtube-video-links-for-social-skills/

Social Thinking, Materials from Meester

Social Thinking (2 of 4) – MATERIALS**

from http://meesterc.wordpress.com/social-thinking-materials/

3/26/10- Use these pictures for an activity about “What am I thinking?” Use  the thinking bubble found in the panda activity. Panda – thinking egg pictures bunny and animal pictures
3/4/10 Thinking With Your Eyes Activity**
3/3/10 Use these materials to work on Tone of Voice- Have students pick a sentence and a tone card- read the sentence in that tone of voice. sentences 1** sentences 2**   sentences 3** tone of voice**
2/26/10- These are activities to use for Cooperation and Perspective taking skills.
  • Noodle Activities** Some fun activities using swim noodles.
  • Cooperation-maze directions Cooperation-maze I  looked but could not locate this game on the website tht I intially used. So here is a copy of it.  The first task I did with students was to have them look at the title and find what was wrong or missing and add the missing letters. It was in color but the missing letters were yellow and didn’t copy- just another opportunity to use as a lesson!
Smart and Wacky Guesses:
1/22/10- I am using these as our group expectations (rules)**. These are similiar to the Behavior Mapping strategy from Michelle Garcia Winner.  Use these larger ones to teach or post as your rules/expecations: group rules  C group rules B group rules  A Use this one to problem solve what each expectation would look like for different situations. group expectation sheet
  • Use these for a perspective taking activity:
  • Panda – thinking I have this also posted under Bulletin board ideas
  • 1/11/10- people photos these were taken from a copyright free site- use the thinking bubble from the panda activity
The following materials were put together with two of my fantastic co-workers during a summer writing task.   There are some extra items that I created at the bottom of this page.
Table of Contents
Extra items
  1. Below are blank thinking & talking bubbles. I had some 6th grade students create the sentences. Laminate all items and cut apart the sentence strips. Talk about which bubble the sentence belongs in and why. Talk about what would happen if you put the sentence in the other bubble and why. This discussion might also bring up the intonation or tone of voice used for the sentences and how it might change the intended meaning.
  2. bubble- words**
  3. bubble- talking**
  4. Bubbles- thinking**
Gesture Game- Print and laminate all pages. Use a dice or spinner with the game board.  Act out the gesture you land on and explain what it means and where you might see/use it. Some of the hand gestures can be presented in different positions by turning your hand in a different direction. You can use the small gesture cards alone or as a bigger visual during the game.   gesture game board**

Printable Train Activities for Kindergartners

Cars, trains, boats, and planes are always amongst the top favorite toys of small children. With their beautiful colors and moving parts its no wonder that children of both genders enjoy playing with them. Children’s television programs like Bob the Builder and Thomas the Tank Engine help to reinforce children’s affinity for vehicles. Trains in particular capture the imaginations of young children. The best way to promote learning is to engage a child’s interest. There are many free printable train activities for Kindergartners available online that can be used to accelerate learning and make it fun and rewarding for children.

Coloring is a staple activity for small children. Free Coloring Pages has a wide selection of free printable train coloring pages and other transportation themed coloring pages. Their images are wonderful for preschool and kindergarten children as they have big bold lines and easily identified shapes with little extraneous shading.

Free Printable Train Activities for Kindergarten Level Coloring:

First School offers a wonderful collection of printable activities for small children. They even have a few printable train activities. Printable math exercises are available here:
http://www.first-school.ws/theme/printables/number-worksheet-train.htm . Printable writing exercises are available here: http://www.first-school.ws/theme/printables/alphabet-train.htm . There are other transportation themed pintables on their site as well.

Kindergarten students will also enjoy creating a special Father’s day card for the daddies in their lives. Mom’s Break offers an excellent download that can easily be printed, cut out with safety scissors, and glued onto card stock. If color ink costs are prohibitive the image can be printed in black and white and copied at 50% light to create a picture that children can color themselves.
Free Printable Train Father’s Day Card for Kindergartens:
http://fathersday.momsbreak.com/printable-fathersday-card.html

Another great free printable train craft is located at DLTK. This printable train is wonderful and comes in both color and black and white. The printable is a fun activity as it stands, but for slightly older children the same printable train parts can be used to embellish any square container, such as an empty milk carton, by readjusting the size of the image to coincide with the size of the container. Children feel a sense of involvement and responsibility by collecting rectangular and square containers from home. Free Printable Train Activities For Kindergarten Crafts:
http://www.dltk-kids.com/crafts/transportation/mtrain.html

Printable train activities aren’t just for classrooms. These activities can be used by after school programs, childcare professionals, and parents. They make the perfect rainy day activity to keep little minds and little fingers entertained.

Easy Train Paper Craft:

Free Printable Train Activities

So I’ve decided that we need to have a Train Day at our house. Since I’m looking for things for my son and me to do together I might as well share what I find with you. You can consider this a supplement to my post on Printable Train Activities for Kindergartners.

We might color this cute train coloring page from My Activity Maker. Or we might talk about the letter T and practice our handwriting with this printable from About.com. About.com also has adorable train stationery, train vocabulary building worksheets, train puzzle and more. We will write a letter to the grandparents about trains today using the stationery! We might do this printable alphabet train from FirstSchool.

Family Fun has a great paper craft train that we can cut out and build. It is complete with engine, passenger, and freight cars. There are even little road and traffic signs! Or for a vintage feel I could make this French paper craft train that I found on Flickr. That might be a fun toy for me to make for my collection. If you download a copy make sure to thank the person who took the time to scan and post the images. They are wonderfully whimsical!

Here is a nice page with links to train facts and lore. There are some great sites listed here that have lots of interesting train information. MeddyBemps also has some fun learning activities and games involving trains. Not many are printable, but there’s a lot of good stuff for mouse practice.

I’m thinking about making some train cut outs or something similar later down the road. I'll keep you posted.

*Edited to add* Click the picture above to enlarge it. Laminate (clear contact paper is cheap and works well if you print on card stock) and punch holes around the edge. Use a shoe lace or piece of yarn with tape around one end to practice lacing.

More tips from the Easter Bunny

The old Easter Bunny has been visiting The Speech Room and wanted me to share these ideas with you!

I used these foam eggs to write positional concepts. The kids had to find the matches and then use them to demonstrate the concept.

I used these eggs that I got last year after easter for 25 cents. Who can pass up that deal.

In the past, I have stuffed them with boardmaker pictures for grammar and other goals. This year, I just couldn't get into putting that much work into these eggs in between groups. So I found these little Easter erasers at Target. There are bunnies, eggs, and carrots. I put them in about 8 of the eggs and I let the kids pull eggs. The kiddo with the most mini items at the end was the 'winner.'

Ok next up - I had to upgrade my puny Boardmaker symbols for 'There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Chick" when I saw Katie's amazing printables. I ditched my boring pictures and used hers! Aren't they great? Go visit her site and then come right back!

I used the pieces with my Granny during circle time, but then I wanted to make some type of follow up game. I used library pockets (got mine from Lakeshore), with each piece of the story on the front. You can laminate them and then re-cut them open with a knife.

For most of my kids, we talked about vocab and then did some following directions activities. I hid these little jumping bunnies inside and we listened for clues (identifying functions!) to decide which bunny they could pull (ie: What can you eat?). Then we played with our hopping bunny describing who went near/far, under/over and fast/slow!

Just another little Easter Bonus from a SRN follower: Emily Meagher. Thanks for sending in your ideas Emily!

You can grab this Easter Egg game for irregular plurals and an Easter basket. It's based off of my 'Pocket Monster" Games.

Emily also found these cute Easter Character Cups. They would be easy to work in for many of your groups! She already came up with some great comprehension question that you can grab here!

Oh and P.S. - I added a 'Donate' button to my side bar after a suggestion from a follower! Creating free printables and blogging about therapy ideas is really something I enjoy doing! That being said - it really does take a lot of work to take the time to blog it for you all, so if you want to donate a little something that would be great (and help me pay for the clipart!) I'm so thankful for all of you being followers! You rock!

What are you doing for Easter?

Speech-ster Egg Hunt

With just a few weeks until Easter, the shelves are filled with chicks, ducks and Easter grass! My friend Tiffany Smith, MA CCC-SLP is sharing a fun activity with us today! Tiffany is fellow Ohio University Bobcat (you might have seen us in the Sweet 16!) and now lives in Charleston, WV.

Since spring break and Easter are approaching quickly, we are having Speech-ster Egg Hunts during therapy. The goal for the students is to find the eggs with their targets on them and make up words that correspond with their target sounds or language goals.

I created Easter eggs that have articulation and language targets on them. The labels listed initial, medial, and final [target sound] as well as past, present, future; antonym, synonym; and rhymes with. I color coded the labels so that my students who recognize their target letters can determine the sound placement even if they cannot read the words initial, medial, and final. I put stickers in the eggs as well as a reward for participating.

I hid the eggs around my room and gave the students several minutes to find them. I varied the time based upon the grade level and number of students. Students collected eggs with their targets in baskets and brought them to the table. Each student was given a printable and a pencil (or for the younger students, I wrote their answer). They took turns thinking of spring-related target words with their target sounds or language goals. If they could not think of one, we brainstormed as a group. Next they put each word into an Easter or spring related sentence. After they completed a sentence, the students were able to open up an egg to see if there was a prize inside. After we completed the worksheet, the students re-hid their eggs so they were ready for the next group and put the worksheet in their speech folder.

Such a great idea to use labels Tiffany! I know the kids will enjoy getting up and moving while their working on their skills with this activity! Thanks for sharing!
